I've set up LDAP for contacts and sharing but not for authentication
so I've got the opposite experience as you.

There is a lot of documentation for this and "out of the box ldap" on
most system is just a storage for people based data. I just finished a
book called "Linux system administration recipes" by Juliet Kemp that
explained setting it up very nicely.

Regarding the palm pre and syncing, do a little checking if you might
be interested. I think I saw in their app store some third party apps
for synchronising with the PC.

Also, having reviewed the tools and developed for iphone, pre and
android (and attempted to do so for blackberry) I think the easiest
platform to develop for is webos. They give you a complete development
stack that works with no tweaking on Windows, Mac OS and LInux. It
uses simple Javascript and HTML and the emulator is pre-configured.

Android is not bad but getting a dev environment set up definitely has
a lot more steps than Pre. Once configured it's a nice system but it
does take a bit more tenacity. But of course there's lots of iphone
apps out there and the first step in that dev environment is "buy a
mac" and then "learn objective C" so apparently people are willing to
jump through some hoops I guess. :-)
