appreciate responses so far.
i should have been more specific.
in the photostudio software (arcsoft) there's a place where you're
supposed to be able to choose a source.
the instructions show six choices including something like "slide
tray," but on my computer, one may only choose "platen."
i un and reinstalled - no difference. and it's the same on the
computer i got for my folks.
and this is the software that came with the scanner
(macworld rated this scanner tops in its class for nearly two years)
waiting for a response from the company.
with silverfast, there's some sort of major problem with the
installation.
attempting to run the software, get only "launch" mode with
unresponsive menu bar choices.
only way to get out of it is force quit.
downloaded an update and tried again. same response.
am awaiting a reply from the company.
in vuescan, i haven't been able to find any instructions related to
slides.
suspect i might have to download their "pro" version; am awaiting
response from the company.
sooo, this experience has been quite frustrating - and has nearly
$200 invested in software.
as non-"pro" user, i find the interfaces for all three software
packages pretty bad.
they seem to assume that anyone who wants to scan slides would
already be an expert user of photoshop-type stuff.
hate leaving the user-friendly environment of apple software,
stuff like the iLife suite that enables casual users to get quite a
bit done through well designed interfaces.
anyhoo, my plaintive message was a shot in the dark - thought someone
else might have encountered the same difficulties.
