How much swap is actually being used?

How often does the alerting mechanism poll the system for this
information?  Is the alerting mechanism external to your running system,
or does it have components that execute under your control?

I wouldn't necessarily advise that, but it may be useful for testing.
Perhaps if there's an event that happens where the swap is actually being
used it will cause out of memory failures instead of a full swap area.
