dnsmasq does work well, we have used it for many systems, including out
main firewall box, for many years. Having it on 14.04, however, is
problematic, possibly because IT is behind another dnsmasq instance on the
firewall?

In any case, I don't see a need for dnsmasq on a workstation - would
anyone know how to rip it out? There is no package installed, nor config
files anywhere under /etc.
