i see you didn't get to the comments section of the article

lasers aren't critical on alignment

on the transmitting side:  really expensive lasers with really expensive
optics transmit a nicely focused, very tight beam.  cheap ones don't

on the receiving side: 2D arrays of photodiodes are used
