People scan new social media networks and try to do "connection spam" so
they can use those connections later.  The first phase is to grab a lot of
early adopters who are largely just interested in playing with the new
platform. They then leverage the large connection count to seem more
important to later targets. They may be interested in spamming you,
collecting (and, optionally, selling) your information or infecting you
with malware.

As an example, I created an obviously fake account on Facebook for
Elizabeth Bennet (even used the photo from the BBC Pride & Prejudice movie)
and I already have over 10 followers.
