I had a similar reaction when I put an Intel X25-E ssd in a production
server. The performance boost was almost unbelievable. No need for RAID
unless you absolutely need redundancy.  Frequent backups are good enough
for us.

Are they economical?  Well, if you are comparing one good SSD to multiple
high speed SAS drives and a good RAID card, yes, they are very economical.
