Yeah, that was mildly disappointing.  That's why I am looking at purchasing TouchDown to connect to Exchange.

Still, the net end result is looking to be worth it.

And by the way, Android is heavily biased towards Google's services. If you have a Google Apps account then you can use the native address book for your Google Contacts.

Actually, the HTC Sense UI interface that Josh removed from his phone has a cool feature that lets you use your Android address book to synchronize from several sources including Facebook, Google and a few others.
