Maybe you're running the wrong Linux distro. CentOS isn't really known as 
a user / desktop OS, it's a server OS, based on RHEL, which is very 
conservative on what packages they offer.

Running Mandriva, I'm able to view .wmv and most other media files, using 
free-as-in-beer codecs, or you have the option of purchasing Fluendo 
codecs. I think Ubuntu has a similar option.
