PunBB is the opposite end of the spectrum from phpbb and vb. It aims
to be more simplistic. I've never needed ldap so don't know if it
integrates.

Drupal has a forum's module which works decent. It also integrates
with ldap and other authentication systems. It also has excellent RSS
support and is very easy to theme. Additional applications can be
plugged into it to make it more than a forum.
