Depending on what your goals and budget are, you might be better off
just using an on-board sata controller and software raid.

There are probably several resources out there if you google for it, but
the basics are that under light to medium loads, the linux software raid
 performs nearly as good as a hardware raid controller.

If you're doing heavy load, or need advanced raid functions, then by all
means, go for the hardware controller. For hd disaster recovery, you
can't beat a nice raid controller.

I'm running a number of linux boxes with software raid, and just
mirroring 2 drives, it has worked flawlessly, and I've been happy with
the performance. YMMV.
