Sorry to be a pest, but do you have a link for that? As one might 
expect, Googling for ISO9660 gets lots of information about the 
low-level format of optical discs, but little about DVD ripping.

Thanks to everyone who responded. From the web pages i've checked out 
nothing is quite perfect for what i want, but maybe i can cobble 
together a script that will do what i want. It seems few rippers will 
bundle the subtitles into the same file without burning them into the 
image; i'd rather end up with something like a Matroska file where 
there can be multiple subtitle tracks all in the same file and it is 
the media player's responsibility to play one at the user's request.
