Those coworkers are basically correct. I do have JavaScript and flash 
enabled, but i won't browse without these Firefox extensions installed: 
QuickJava, NoScript, Flashblock. QuickJava isn't so important to me (it 
is used to easily enable/disable Java and JavaScript) because offhand i 
don't know if i even have Java installed, much less enabled. NoScript 
and Flashblock are lifesavers though. NoScript makes it very easy to 
keep JavaScript disabled for most sites but allow it when needed, and 
Flashblock replaces annoying flash applications with a little flash 
logo that only loads the flash application if you click it. I also 
browse through a Privoxy proxy that filters out most of the ads.
