THe "Sound Problem Hoary Fix" link is broken, but I expect it's
along the same lines as the "Comprehensive Sound Problem Solutions
Guide" I tried. In any case, it wasn't a permissions problem,
and I don't see any "IEC" options in alsamixer.

This is a desktop, and there's no modem. There's also no modem
modules loaded, near as I can tell.

dlg at pedro:~$ lspci | grep -i modem
dlg at pedro:~$ lsmod | grep -i modem
dlg at pedro:~$

Even if there were, there's no /etc/hotplug/ directory to put a
blacklist file in.

dlg at pedro:~$ cd /etc/hotplug
bash: cd: /etc/hotplug: No such file or directory
dlg at pedro:~$

Thanks.
