If the system responds to 3-finger salutes, then the system hasn't really gone
down. I like to think that if you have caps-locks or num-locks responsivity,
then you can still salvage/diagnose the issue and ressurect the system.
A diagnosis of the problem goes a lot further than a 3-finger salute any day.
So can you provide a better description of your problem?

What do you mean by a lockup? X stop working? (try cntl-alt-bksp
instead of cntl-alt-del), or jump to a terminal (cntl-alt-f1) and tail
the logs. No keyboard input (but it recognizes cntl-alt-del???) or mouse
frozen?

What does dmesg say? Is there anything consistent
that causes the lockup? Your comment about restoring a corrupted kernel: do
you mean how to restore a functional kernel? If so, what bootloader are you
using, and why might the current kernel be corrupt? Did you recompile?

You post leads to more questions than can be grappled with without further
description.
