So, I installed Debian (Thanks, Jay!) and now I got exactly my wish: 
g++ works and emacs works.

Sadly, I no longer have x windows, and I'm now running telnet and ftp 
(no breaking into my computer, OK?), but I will admit that I had 
narrowly constrained my wish list... :-) I'll get those other things 
figured out in September. I'm pretty sure I can handle that myself, 
though.
