I'll second that.  Ours is a cannon powershot too.  Pretty happy with it.
Some models use standard AA batteries and some a rechargeable battery pack.
Based on this one, I think our next one will be a canon too.

I have a Canon Powershot S500 (PC1084), it's an outstanding camera - 5mp, 4x
optical zoom. Uses CF cards (comes with a measly 32mb card, but I got a
256mb card for $19). Works fine with gphoto under linux.

The only big complaint I have about it is there is no battery meter... so
you basically have to use it until the battery dies. For this reason, if
you're taking it on vacation, I'd get an extra battery pack.
