yes, you should have a last name with a space.  my names:
Barry Von Ahsen (cannonical)
Barry Vonahsen
Von Ahsen Barry
Von Barry Ahsen
Von Barry
Barry Von
....etc.  Don't forget to add misspellings to this list as well.

For at least 2 semesters, my official name with the ISU registrar was
Ahsen Barry Von (first, middle, last).  Good stuff.

As for the original topic, I think you can name a child any thing, so 
long as it has >1024 characters.  Then you can cause havoc with all 
kinds of applications :)
