I am using WEP but cannot find where to set that. I had not got to that point yet because I don't even have anything telling me that I have any wireless networks available.

Some rhetorical questions:

Is your radio on? Sometimes ndiswrapper defaults to RadioState 1.

What does wavemon show you?

Are you associating?

Are you using WEP, WPA, or some kind of encryption? authentication?

Can you associate using "iwconfig essid ?"

Can you see anything in the range with "iwlist scan?"
