Mine is an external box providing a link to the TCP/IP gateway.  I've got a
router/WAP with a static IP tied to it directly through a standard patch
cable.   The router feeds the rest of the house through a combination of
wireless and structured wiring.  (two runs of cat5 to every room in the
house..woohoo!) 

I believe they have a cheaper internal card for your computer...but I
wouldn't recommend it normally.
