Something else you may find useful (I know I do) is MailTags. By adding metadata to important emails as you receive them, you can get back to them quickly. InDev has released Public Preview 1 of MailTags 3 which works on Lion. It's really slick and if finding email quickly from a massive archive is something you need to to do frequently, I can't recommend it enough.
