As an alternative to the automatic methods, you can make a collage  
manually. Just create a new blank image large enough for the two  
images. Then open your two images so you have three windows (two  
images and a blank). Now just drag and drop to create you new  
combined image. Use the arrange command under layers to help align  
images. When your satisfied with the results, you can  
"flatten" (under layers) your image to make this a single picture.  
Crop to your liking.
