I'll be the stick in the mud. :)

I don't care for Joomla and stopped using it entirely a couple years back. I had been sing it since it was Mambo and embroiled in several legal battles that led to it's 3rd name of Joomla. It is not, unfortunately, any more secure than WordPress. The number of exploits available are higher for Joomla than WP and WP development to counter security measures tends to happen more quickly as well.

You open the biggest security gates when you start adding 3rd party extensions. It's been my experience most of those are very poorly coded. The primary reason I dropped Joomla for my clients is that to do any real customization of a Joomla site requires both extensive PHP knowledge, but worse, knowledge of the Joomla APIs, which keep changing, sometimes without warning or redirection. Nothing worse than having code that has been working for 2 years suddenly throw your site into an error-cosm and have to spend hours fining out they dropped an API call you were relying on without properly deprecating it first.

OK, so that was all very technical, sorry. That is a problem with CMS software. Customizing it is very technical. Managing it, however, is usually dead-simple. So, do I recommend WP over Joomla? Not necessarily. I'm not using WP any more either. We wrote our own blog and forum software so we have complete control over it and the security. That isn't an option here, so a canned solution will be best. I suggest looking into Drupal and Concrete5. If you want the simplest management and the most extensibility and customization options, you really can't beat WordPress. Joomla is used by a number of commercial entities these days, so it is a valid choice. Just not my first.

My 0.02, take it for what it's worth.
