I don't have any specific suggestions but there is some cool stuff out
there.  Wadia makes an iPhone/iPod dock that bypasses the cheap $0.10
DAC in the device and sends a digital signal to the next piece of
equipment.

I skipped this altogether by ripping my CD's as AIFF files for full
resolution and using the optical output from an old AirPort Express to
my "high" end system using wired ethernet.

I think that Audio Video Logic (if your local to Des Moines) has the
Wadia dock available for a demo.  They also have good options and
opinions on speakers.
