[DM-MUG] Change of address

I have now seen somewhat the same thing coming from AOL mostly, but 
from hotmail the other day.  Am I correct in believing that if X had 
his/her email system compromised and found out about it, whether AOL, 
hotmail, yahoo or whatever, they could change their password on the 
account and the person couldn't continue to access the account to 
send from it= or is the sending totally separate from the smtp 
authentication process?
