Thank you all for the suggestions. A bit later I went back and tried it thinking it would not work..... and it did. I spoke with CW and I think what happened was I put it into sleep mode and disconnected it from my backup unit. Without turning both units off I may
have done a non-computer geek boo-boo even after CW had warned me to be careful never to do that.
My Macbook is working great again in spite of my error and I still love it.

Crashed? Is the backlight off? Holding down the power key forces a shut off.
