You could get DevonThink Personal.  I do think if it's only for you 
it might be overkill, but I think you can do a trial run.  I did and 
decided not to use it back awhile ago then got  DT and just haven't 
used it yet but plan to.

There are other ideas and if I can pull the info easily from the 
MacLaw list I'll try to share it here = it's a big topic there.  I 
think Yep and Leap come to mind.

I do tend to rely on the Finder and Spotlight and that seems to work 
but I'm sure it's not optimal.
