[DM-MUG] scanning negatives

Hi,

When I am scanning negatives I will frequently find one which is very  
light so that I know it will be dark when it is scanned but when I  
look at it against a light I can see that there is something in the  
negative but when I scan it it is so dark that I cannot lighten it  
enough to show any image. Is there any way of lighting it enough in  
the scan stage to catch what image there might be?
