It's the backlight that is not working. I did a quick google and saw there
are numerous pages and videos describing the problem so you can confirm that
it is what you're seeing.
I also saw results for buying replacement parts and instructions on how to
fix it. I suspect the parts aren't costly so you could take a low-risk
gamble at fixing it yourself. (you'll either fix it or it will remain
unusable)
