First of all, you have two (at least) distinct issues: 1) your e-mail script
stopped working and 2) you are not happy with 10.5. First I will address 1,
because your "error" is, in fact, exactly what I would expect should happen.
To use your local mail server, you need a local mail server.

Edit /etc/postfix/aliases:
At line 13, add "root: incidentally" (or whatever your short user name is.

Edit /etc/postfix/main.cf:
At line 70, add "myhostname=aspen.local"
At line 77, add "mydomain=aspen.local"

I didn't save changes to this file. Just make sure that
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/org.postfix.master.plist looks like:
