There are a few products that create really great panoramic images.
I've found the difference between a mediocre and an excellent panorama
is the equipment used to take the pictures. And I don't mean the diff
between a point and shoot or a dslr, though that does make a
difference.
There are some panoramic heads you can get that control the camera so
that the process is largely automated and happens quite quickly. I've
never seen one in real life but I've read about them and I've
definitely seen the end results.
My wife is a real estate photographer so she has simple tools she uses
(since the houses don't move too much while you snap your pics :-)).
It's time consuming though so someone who did a lot of these, or like
the register with breaking news needed very quick results, would
benefit from investing in good quality tools. Our first panorama was
shot on 35mm film with her standing in the middle of a road and then
scanned in manually after the film was developed.
