.DS_Store files are where Mac OS X stores things such as custom
backgrounds, icon sizes, etc.. for a window.
I am not sure why they would be doing this, but is this the hard drive
that you are having problems with the partitions? I just saw you note
about the enclosure going bad, and it could have corrupted some nasty
stuff. If it is the same drive, I would make sure to copy it to a
fresh drive and at least wipe the existing.
