I echo the info on iWork [use it all the time, including to open MS 
items] but when it doesn't work [esp. with some of the newer docx 
items] OpenOffice does a great job, and is free.

as for transferring negatives and slides, are you trying to transfer 
mostly one or the other [I have very few slides, for instance]? 
There may be other or better answers for what you want.  You might 
research it in some photographer mags and sites.  I ended up just 
scanning the photographs into my computer via my ScanSnap and 
skipping the negatives conversion.
