Dont forget that Apple's iWork ($79) also opens word documents (in  
Pages), Excel spreadsheets (in Numbers) and PowerPoint presentations  
(in Keynote). Using the File > Save As ... dialog, you can save out to  
those formats too when a Windows drone needs to open it on the other  
end.

As for fonts, that's going to be true whatever program you're using,  
or whatever operating system you're using. If you don't have the  
specialized font that the author used to create the document, then the  
closest available font may be substituted, or a system default will be  
used. If they're sticklers on fonts, they need to tell you what  
they're using, and if possible send it along. In other words, that's  
their job, not necessarily yours.
