We get a lot of microsoft office-related files where I work (screen 
printing business).  Since we have pretty much no use for MS Office, and 
we also run mostly Macs, I have been using OpenOffice.org to open files 
that are of the Word or Powerpoint nature.  In our case, we have to make 
sure with the customer that the fonts match up if the person sending the 
file is particular about that sort of thing, but if you just need to be 
able to read what's in the file, then OO works great.

Sorry, but I don't have any experience with any negative- or 
slide-to-digital equipments, though.
