Thank you Matt, Jon and Anastasia,

Thank you for clarifying my understanding of Raid types with your
well thought out detailed explanations. Matt - thanks for the
correction, you had me scratching my head for a minute but I knew
what you meant ;)

After reading your explanations, I think I'll be testing a setup
using RAID 1, it makes the most sense for my application use.
I plan on using it for my dedicated machine that is used to transfer
up to 100 gigs of data a day. The time it takes me to do this is more
important than the data because the video data is still on the tapes
and could be re-transferred if necessary. A nightly backup of this
data is not practical for many reasons but I'm thinking if the drive
does decide to fail, it will most likely do so on my last tape while
I'm transferring data and then the whole days work is wasted. This is
why I think Raid 1 might be a good way to go. At the price of drives
today, I think it's worth the extra insurance.

I was hoping for a speed improvement like you say you get with other
Raid setups but It's not worth the risk.

You guys/Gals are great! Thanks,
    John Robertson
