I've made three installs of Windows 7 in the past few weeks and I've come to the conclusion that Windows 7 has one-upped OS X in the UI department with the Snap feature.
The Snap feature saves an enormous amount of time and frustration in arranging Windows on the desktop. Snap is one of those obscure features we subconsciously desire in any operating system. Anyone who has spent any amount of time arranging Windows side by side on any OS will immedialtly appreciate this feature.
Description of Snap from a Microsoft website: Snap is a quick new way to resize open windows, simply by dragging them to the edges of your screen. Depending on where you drag a window, you can make it expand vertically, take up the entire screen, or appear side-by-side with another window. Snap makes reading, organizing, and comparing windows fast and easy.
I wanted this feature on my Snow Leopard desktop so I did a little research and found an application called TwoUp and it is free. Once you have this feature you will wonder how you ever lived without it. TwoUp does not replicate Spaces or Expose. In my opinion TwoUp is quite a bit more useful than Spaces or Expose in general.
The TwoUp application can be downloaded from this URL: http://www.irradiatedsoftware.com/twoup/
Once installed it appears in the menu bar (see the screenshot below) where you can modify preferences. If you are using Snow Leopard you will need to modify Systems Preferences - Universal Access. Enable access for assistive devices.
Snap & TwoUp are one of those simple functions that is easy to appreciate, like a door knob or cupboard handle.
