[DM-MUG] Q ref speakers etc - lack of sound coming out

I noticed the speakers [Monsoon flats with a sub-woofer] are not 
carrying sound from the MacPro = I checked the sound pref., and 
iTunes and they're at max volume, I tested with a spare set of crappy 
speakers and sound does come out of the MP - took the plug to the 
setup and put it in my iPod and no sound there either

so apparently it isn't the MacPro = might be the speakers [which 
otherwise work fine but must be 10 yrs old]

How can I figure it out?  I turned off and back on the subwoofer 
[which I think powers the speakers] without success...if it's the 
subwoofer I guess I could replace that [?]

Any suggestions?
