[DM-MUG] problems with icon view in finder?

usually when I open up the icon view in the Finder window [as with 
looking at documents or images] I see them just fine -- it still 
works fine on the main machine, you can see in the icons tiny 
previews of the item, which works best for me....but I just opened an 
external disk and the icons all come in as jpgs == no preview unless 
I run thru them one by one in some other way - I want a window where 
I can see all of them in preview style so I can pick which ones to 
quicklook or whatever...any idea of why this is?  I don't recall it 
happening before.  What settings do I need to change?
