Get a wide-screen monitor that supports pivot. It lets you rotate the
widescreen monitor so that you have a super-tall monitor.
The Dell equiv to the Apple 24" monitor is the Dell UltraSharp
2408WFP. It's pretty much just like the Apple except that it does not
have the integrated cable where all your wires are bundled together
but it does support rotation. Like the Apple it has Display Port and
USB but also hdmi, DVI and standard VGA inputs.

I'm sorry, I don't know for sure if the Mac OS supports rotation but
if they do you'll love it considering your use-case. Oh, and like the
Apple display, this Dell Ultrasharp is a premium monitor and is priced
as such (but I do see it go on sale once in a while). But it's not
hard to find less expensive monitors that support rotation.
