[DM-MUG] Time Capsule

There are actually a couple of ways to get Time Machine to work with a
3rd party networked drive (e.g., a shared drive on another computer).
Apple just won't support them officially.
The first method, which I just found on the internet, is to open
Terminal and run the following command:
defaults write com.apple.systempreferences
TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
Then mount the network drive, and you should be able to select it in
Time Machine's setup.
The second method, which I actually used successfully myself, is to
connect the drive directly to the computer you want to back up and set
up Time Machine to use that disk. So, if you're using a FW drive,
plug it directly into the MacBook; if you're using another Mac,
connect the two using FW and boot the second machine in target disk
mode. Once you've set up Time Machine to use that disk locally, you
can physically remove it from the machine, mount it remotely, and Time
Machine will still recognize it. The secret here is that Time Machine
adds a couple of hidden files to the drive that tell it that the drive
is okay to use.
As I mentioned, I use Time Machine without problem with a Western
Digital MyBook 500GB USB2.0 drive plugged into a plain Airport
Extreme. This is not an officially-supported solution, but it works
just fine (so far).
