Audacity is a pretty powerful tool: it has a built-in EQ, compression,  
noise filters, pop/click filters, and a whole host of other useful  
effects. Just always be sure to work from a copy, not the original file.

Audacity is available for Mac OS X (older version still available for  
Mac OS 9), Windows 98/2000/Me/XP/Vista, and for Linux. Download  
Audacity for free (open source!) at http://audacity.sourceforge.net
