To properly take a hammer to a drive, you need to open up the drive so
that you see the platters. Then you have to make sure that the pieces
are so tiny that you can't pull information off of them, which the
average lawyer doesn't know how small to make it (will it blend? Yes
it will.) Remember that on a Terabyte hard drive that you are looking
at 18.5 gigabytes of information per square inch. That's a lot of
personal information. Each piece of a smashed hard drive _can_ be
recovered with advanced techniques.
Or...
You can use something that conforms to requirements to protect
secrets. DoD, SarbOx, HIPPA all have requirements for destroying
data, and all do so without actually destroying the disk. All do
random rewrites of the hard drive multiple times (to eliminate shadow
traces of the original data.)
