DBAN is a bootable floppy/CD linux distro that can be used by at least
any x86 machine.
I believe there is a PPC release as well, but that's getting less and
less of an issue.
You can also use (the much underutilized) Disk utility in OSX - it has
options to do most of the same multi-pass secure wipe operations DBAN
provides - but of course it only works on Macs.

Note you have 4 choices from fast/insecure ranging to very slow/very
secure. 7 pass is DOD standard (meaning the military is satisfied with
it) .
The NSA probably does it 70 times and still shreds the drives
physically before blasting them in a furnace and shooting the slag
into deep space with a time delayed nuke*
*Complete paranoid fantasy, but I bet they'd like something like that.
The original question was about an HP PC, so DBAN is the best bet for
secure wiping.
