Sorry for the dupe folks - I like DBAN, but I'm not enthused enough to  
repeat the same post verbatim.

back On Topic: I think (iirc) that DBAN does at least have the option  
to just do a single pass (or possibly a couple) which might be a good  
compromise between "just zero" and DOD spec paranoia. It's been a  
while though, we mostly just physically destroy drives these days.
