Another vote for DBAN with some advice.  I've read a few opinions that
state it is sufficient to just write zeros to the drive.  Unless you
think your brother-in-law is going to tear the drive apart and put it
under a scanning electron microscope, that should be good enough.  If
you are more paranoid (as I am), then choose one of the DOD options
listed.  Note, however, that the DOD options write over the entire
drive with random data many, many times.  This could take many hours
to complete (from 10 to 20 or a lot more).  Writing zeros is quick (1
pass) and will defeat all but the most determined.
