I saw something about this specific problem on dslreports.com. youtube 
uses an akamai-like content distribution network and the way you get 
directed to a specific server is via provider-specific DNS settings. 
Someone on Qwest DSL would get IP's of specific servers nearby the qwest 
network, someone on Mediacom would get IP's of servers that were near 
mediacom. When you use opendns you lose that benefit and might be 
getting the IP of servers in another continent, etc.
