Another thing you can try is to install Applejack

Just don't launch it in the finder.   It is a command line app.

Install it and reboot while holding down <command>-S to boot into  
single-user mode.  Then type "applejack" and follow the instructions.

Applejack is one of the utilities I will be talking about at the  
05/26/2009 DMMUG meeting.
