Yes, the higher numbers you use the smaller the stuff on the screen
will be. You can avoid stretching the image by using the same aspect
ratio - i.e. choose a wide-screen resolution for a wide-screen
monitor. I expect 1280x720 will be a good match since it's the
standard 720p resolution that your monitor will be optimized to deal
with it.
