My USB Logitech head phones have been refusing to be of use when
listening to iTunes or listening to my Skype calls. The microphone
would work fine in all applications. I tried booting the computer with
the head phones set to work and sometimes they would work. Then it got
so nothing would work. I even tried unplugging and then plugging the
head phone in to different USB locations. When I moved the head phones
from the hub to the keyboard, and then even to the computer's USB ports
nothing changed. It has even been suggested that having a large number
of USB devises hooked up to my G4 tower was the problem. I still got no
sound when some of them were removed.
Then I found the following posted after doing a Google search for
problems with USB head phones. (The posting is in red at the bottom of
this email.) Specific to Logitech head phones and using Skype like I
have hooked up to my G4 tower. This first time I tried solution it
worked. The only thing I found was that it was not specific to needing
to run Skype. I had to do the solution to even get iTunes to work. Then
I checked out Skype and it was working. So, then I shutdown the
computer and rebooted. I was expecting the same problem and that I
would need to use the suggested solution again. It happened just like
they mentioned and the solution worked just great to solve the problem
again. There were other postings that indicated this is a know problem.
Yet the suggestion was that Mac OS 10 upgrades were the problem. Yet, I
am still using OS 10.3.9 yet. The only changes to software has been
downloading the newest version of Skype. I even refused to change
iTunes and it is still at version 7.2 yet. So, my experience seems to
suggest it may be changes in Skype that might be causing the problem.
Any ideas
===========================
Terri,
I think it may have something to do with Logitech and the latest
releases of OSX. I have the Logitech headset with mic. model 250. My
Skype preferences are always set to Logitech for both input and output.
But I find I have to tweak the System Preferences every time I start
Skype. In the Sys Prefs/Sound panel both my input and output are also
set to my Logitech headset. But that's not enough! If you click the
output volume slider you still won't hear a thing. Instead, click on
"Mute". Then try the volume slider. You should now hear a beep in your
headset.
YOU MUST DO THIS EVERYTIME YOU START SKYPE. It's a nuisance, but I
haven't yet seen a cure. I read somewhere that this problem began with
one of the later releases of OSX. So hopefully it will be fixed in
future.
There's a little utility program that looks great for switching between
input/output sound devices. It's called "SoundSource" and once
installed it'll always be on your main menu bar. Unfortunately, it
doesn't fix this problem. However, it does save a couple of clicks for
getting to the Sys Prefs/Sound panel, so that's a time saver. Google
'SoundSource' to find their download site. It's free.
Hope this helps. At least it's good to know you're not alone!
